Most roofing materials eventually wear out and need replacing — some sooner than others.  Those who are comfortable walking around on a roof can usually perform simple roof repairs.

However, if you are installing new roofing on a room addition or replacing an entire roof, weigh several factors before choosing roofing materials and deciding whether or not to do the work yourself.

In most cases, the roof must go up quickly in case of rain.  To estimate the time for an inexperienced person, allow 2 hours for the first square (100 square feet) of shingles, which you might be able to reduce to 1 hour after having some experience.

Compare that speed with about ½ hour per square usually taken by a professional roofer.

Also consider the type of roofing.  Certain roofs, such as tar and gravel, slate, and metal with standing seams, should be done professionally.

Roll roofing, composition shingles, tile and wood shingles or shakes can be installed by homeowners who are handy and have enough help with lifting materials to the roof.

You will need at least one sturdy ladder and roof jacks if the slope is steeper than 6 in 12.  Be prepared for rain by having a roll or two of plastic sheeting or tarps handy.  Wear soft-soled shoes, such as sneakers, that will not damage the roofing material.
